Can episode of mega mergers of public banks revive the dwindling economy?

It has been a consistent concern from academia and the corporate world that may be we are heading into the economic recession slowly. Demonstration of frequent frauds in public banks, continuous contraction in world demand, ongoing trade war, speedy emergence of anti-globalization sentiments, Brexit and pivotal shifts in the world’s geopolitical situation are enough to generate endogenous and exogenous factors that can push an economy into back seat. Certainly, these are not something new to us, but are important as now, we have a dream to become a $5 trillion economy.

Our dreams make us more conscious to think carefully, strategically and systematically. The existing financial system is considered as a backbone of an economy. Last year’s NBFC crisis gave us an opportunity to look deeper into our financial system. RBI’s PCA (prompt corrective action) and successive infusion of money from government side did some help to our banking sector. These efforts were not enough to captain a big ship like India, as a result, there has been demand for sweeping reforms in the banking sector from experts.

Today’s decision to merge 10 of public sector banks in 4 can be consider one of such reform that we required. Last year’s merger of Dena bank with Bank of Baroda and their success gave an impetus to the latest reform. These mergers will enhance the efficiency of public banks, which are known for their high inefficiency and low capital capital adequacy. Now, banks will have more resource to utilize and not hesitate to embrace better technology to improve their efficiency, customer satisfaction and lending strategies. These mergers will be accompanied by certain reforms in their operating and functioning style. It is good that having a majority government in center, reforms will not be mercurial in nature. It is likely that 5% growth rate in the first quarter will push MPC (monetary policy committee) to further rate cut. These rate cuts and reduction in operating cost for banks can to pass benefits to the customers.

The finance minister has also made an announcement regarding infusion of money in these banks. It will help banks to exit Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) prompt corrective action (PCA) exercise. Finance Secretary Rajeev Kumar tweeted about the various governance reforms for PSU banks to achieve the $5 trillion economy. These reforms are targeted towards the managerial structure of PSBs where management can be accountable to the Boards, Board committee of nationalized banks. Higher independence at the bank level to make its decision regarding lending policies and bank rates will be welcomed. Most of the expertise agrees that reforms will help to revive the economy in the long run. Although, there are external factors which are not in our control will affect the mighty economy. We need continuous and commensurate reforms to maintain the pace of economic growth.

Why should we care about data localization?

A microscopic view can not provide the real picture of stringent objection regarding the data localization from the developed world to India. Before we go on a comprehensive discussion of data localization, let’s try to understand it. Basically, It is all about storing all form of data on any device that is physically present within the geographical boundary of any country where it gets generated.

So why are we concerned about it? Why do not we leave this as a choice of a company to store anywhere they want? Why is the developed world objecting the idea of data localization? How it affects us as an individual? These are some questions that we need to discuss in a very detailed manner.

Countries like US, UK, and other Europian countries have their own law regarding data storing. These country does not allow any of the company to generate data within the geographical boundaries and store on other countries. It provides the ultimate control to the government over data. Excessive use of technology to get useful knowledge about the users’ demand pattern, likes, dislikes, movements, inter-state relations, social fabrics, and others makes data more sensitive as it pretends. Can you imagine the situation when we are on the verge of external threat and all our information is possessed by our enemy? It can be an improvised source of weapon especially when the fifth generation of warheads are emerging. It is completely possible that data abuse can take place when we do not have any regulation over it. Even, in such a situation, we are not sure where can we get justice? If we want to avoid such possible disasters then we must have ensured its reachability and usability. It makes data localization important issues to secure citizens privacy, national security and sovereignty, and economic growth. In recent years globalization made the things worse for some of the nations. Universal accessibility of social media sites such as facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram can be used to break the existing social fabrics intentionally. Hence, we need an overall long term planned policy on data localization which is irreversible sustainable and flexible. This policy should be framed in a manner where the user should be the real owner of his data. No company, organization, and institution are allowed to use data without the consent of real owner under the exception such as national sovereignty and security threat. Even, this exception should be conditional and available only for the publically elected government under the guidance of the judicial system. Government and organizations should be allowed to use data after ensuring that it will benefit society. We have some of the recommendations that have been provided by the committee of experts led by Justice BN Srikrishna and The Srikrishna Committee.

At last, we all should discuss it in our domain as this issue is directly related to us. The government should not lie down under foreign pressure. As an independent Individual, no one wants to live in the new form of imperialism where our desires and decision control by others whether it is a private or public entity.

Renewable energy and its future in India

Yesterday, I had a wonderful opportunity to represent my organization Azure Power in a conference organized by ASSOCHAM along with my collegues. The conference was all about to bridge the existing gap between the RE industry and policymakers in India. Here, I would like to share my experience with all of you in a very concise manner. It ran through the weather and Energyforecast and scheduling to energy storage capacity.   For, Weather and Energy forecasting, Panel talked about the prevailing methodology in the sector. There was also consensus among panelists that weather forecasting tools can be used to forecast energy too. Most of the institution and distribution companies use the time trend model and statistical techniques such as minimizing the RMSE. However, still, most of the members of the leading organization in forecasting and scheduling have pointed out that they are very skeptical about the quality of weather data despite being an unprecedented improvement in the same on last decade. The single most problem that almost all of the developers face is uncertainty over cloud covering. Developers are not able to capture the extremes in their model, especially during monsoon season. Some of the insights that I captured, we also need something called human logics and tweak our model based on our experience about the particular plants.   From the regulatory point of view, almost all of the developers raised the concern over forecasting and scheduling practice and its requirement. Policymakers rebutted these concerns by highlighting the possibility of grid failure. This rebuttal cited some of the examples from the country like Australia and European ones.Mr. S.K. Sonee highlighted the facts that as a country, we need DSM and F&S because we do not want to set-up a paralyzed system where supply and demand mismatches occur frequently. Further, It can also help developers and their agents to work in a very planned manner. They can also balance their energy portfolio. Another incentive that developers can pick from this regulatory framework is to look forward to energy reserves.  For SLDCs/RLDCs and Grid Balancing, I could not follow the discussion as per my aspirations due to lack of some technical knowledge that is required to understand it. Now, We will discuss something about the large scale renewable integration. Basically, it is calling for one nation, one grid. So, as a nation, we want to build an industry that is responsible and understands its importance. Since we want to replace 30 percent of conventional energy with RE, then it cannot be done in a very haphazard manner. We do not know which technology would prevail in the long run, what would be the demand pattern? Will there be continuity in tectonic shifts in technology or replace by smooth one? Will there be any change in energy demand preference? What are the plans for Green Energy Corridor? These are some questions that we need to answer while addressing the problem of large scale renewable integration. (I would love to answer some of these questions if you want.)  The last topic Energy Storage was somewhat more technical for me. Still, I will try to land you there. It basically says that large scale battery storage for grid stability can be installed. We are moving on the lithium battery age as its marginal cost has dropped significantly over the period of time and also have a cost comparative advantage over other batteries. Still, It would be interesting to watch out whether any existing technology will be petered out or survived. Some of the panelists also demanded government interventions as uncertainty prevails in the energy market.  From my side, Solar energy market is still in a very nascent stage. We need to comprehend it in a very passionate manner. We need to find out and execute the best existing techniques and practices to get the desired results.

A man with honesty

He was a student in Aurangabad ( a city in India) back into the 80s. It is completely possible that while making through his study he had gone through all the terrible if and buts like managing food, health and fees. He told us that as a student they used to visit a shop. Shopkeeper helped him once when he was needed 200 bucks. After finishing his study, Richad left India. During this time, he managed to have a great political career. Now, he is a MP and working in external affairs committee for his country, Kenya. During his visit to India, he wanted to meet the same shopkeeper who helped him. He landed Aurangabad two days earlier as he knew that it is hard to find them easily. He was accompanied with his wife that makes it special. Finally, he made through it. He found Kashinath’s (shopkeeper) home. When he introduced himself to Kashinath, it was a complete moment to capture. They were shocked that a man come to his home just to return 200 bucks. Kashinath didn’t accept the money but he did accept him. They offer him good home made food, gifted saree to his wife, and off course lot of blessings. While interaction Richard told that I learnt honesty from this land(India) and I will preserve it. Wow, is it not cool? Undoubtedly, it was not a matter of 200 bucks. It is a something that lies in our human heart. But the difference is, we often ignore these feelings and gratitudes while Richard chose to respond these positively. Thanks Richard 😊. Your small action will give a smile forever in the face of Kashinath. Yeah, it will help to change the perception towards African people in India.

I read this story here .

Love

We mate in the darkness of hour,

There were no hopes,

We were late in the race of power,

We got stucked

There were no scopes.

We sat beneath the tree,

We were only for ourselves,

We din’t had family and friend.

Everyone else was living there

Only and only for themselves.

I was hungry, she was too

She was bare but had a loaf of bread,

I gave her mine dress,

She gave me her food.

Suddenly, we started loving ourselves.

This is how, we became family

Now I am in her, she is within me

She gives her smile instead of tears.

Now, I love her and she loves me

All it happened own itself…
